What is Configuration Control?

Configuration Control is the systematic evaluation, coordination, approval or disapproval, and implementation of all approved changes in the configuration of a configuration item after formal establishment of its configuration baseline(s).

It ensures that changes to configuration items are properly identified, documented, evaluated, approved, incorporated, and verified. This discipline is critical for maintaining technical integrity and ensuring all stakeholders are working from the same baseline.

Key Objectives

  • Control changes to approved configuration documentation
  • Prevent unauthorized changes from being incorporated
  • Ensure all changes are properly evaluated and approved
  • Maintain traceability of all configuration changes
  • Support audit and verification activities
